Digital Dermatoscopy Diagnosis Accuracy Challenge

Here we present current information about the DermaChallenge game we developed at the Department of Dermatology at the Medical University of Vienna.

Start playing!

Within the game you have to solve differen tasks in 5 Levels:

In level 1 you have to find the right category out of 7 diagnoses:

  • Actinic Keratosis / Morbus Bowen / Intraepithelial Carcinoma
  • Basal Cell Carcinoma
  • Benign pigmented keratosis / Seborrheic Keratosis / Solar Lentigo
  • Dermatofibroma
  • Melanoma
  • Nevus
  • Vascular Lesion (incl. Hemorrhage)

In level 2 you have to sort out melanomas.

In level 3 you have to sort out seborrheic keratosis from other lesions.

In level 4 we present 30 random images from a larger set of images. You have to assign the lesions to one of the seven categories similar to level 1. After 3 attempts in level 4 you will have to wait 1 week for your next 3 attempts.

The final level 5 is equal to level 4 with different images. This time, however, you will be challenged by the "final enemy" - a computer algorithm. This algorithm is made from the best entries to the ISIC 2018 challenge, and you can find out whether you can beat the current best artificial intelligence in dermatoscopic skin lesion classification: Each image will be shown for 20 seconds, after 5 more seconds the answer will be automatically marked as wrong and the next image is loaded.

General Rules:

  • You have to complete the first three levels at least once to replay the levels.
  • Once the first 3 levels are completed the following additional features will be enabled:
    1. Highscores showing the top-5 results per level
    2. Replay of all levels with a new set of images
  • If you complete level 5 at least once you will be able to see feedback of your level 4 matches

Level 4 - We have a winner

After 2500 efforts by more than 1000 participants, one player got all 30 cases in level 4 right. Juan Jaimes from the US will receive a Dermlite DL4 for his outstanding achievement. Congratulations.

Level 5 - Win the "Dermoscopy & Diagnosis" book

Participants who beat the computer will enter a draw to win one of the five Definitive Guides to Dermoscopy & Diagnosis of Benign and Malignant Skin Lesions (, a 540-page comprehensive reference comprising the extensive expertise of the most influential experts in dermatoscopy.
